Every coop we review gets a Coop Score: four sub-scores, each rated 0–10, that combine into one number. The four criteria are Predator Resistance, Climate Fit, Capacity Accuracy, and Upkeep Load. Below is the exact point scale for each, so you can check our math or apply the same rubric to a coop we haven’t reviewed yet.

If a coop scores below 5 on Predator Resistance, its overall Coop Score is capped at 5, no matter how well it scores on climate fit or upkeep. A coop that doesn’t keep predators out has failed at its core job, and no amount of convenience should paper over that. |
Predator Resistance (0–10)
Predator Resistance measures whether a coop’s hardware, mesh, and ground-level defenses actually stop digging and biting predators, not just deter casual pests.

| 7–8 | Full hardware cloth (1/2-inch mesh or smaller, 19-gauge or heavier) on every opening; predator-resistant latch; no apron. |
| 9–10 | Full hardware cloth on every opening, a predator-resistant double-locking latch, and a buried or apron skirt extending at least 12 inches outward. |
Climate Fit (0–10)
Climate Fit measures the ratio of ventilation area to solid wall area, checked against the climate zone the coop is realistically suited for. Coops are tested for both cold-climate and hot-climate fit separately, since the two often trade off against each other.
- 0–2: ventilation and insulation mismatched for any common climate zone — causes moisture buildup in cold weather or heat stress in warm weather.
- 3–5: workable in one climate zone (cold or hot) but poorly suited to the other, with no easy retrofit.
- 6–8: solid fit for one climate zone, with a straightforward seasonal retrofit (vent covers, added insulation) to extend to the other.
- 9–10: verified ventilation-to-wall ratio and insulation balance appropriate for its stated climate zone, tested through a full season in that zone.
Capacity Accuracy (0–10)
Capacity Accuracy compares a manufacturer’s stated bird count against the interior square footage the coop actually offers, measured against the 4 sq ft of interior coop space per standard-size hen used by university extension services (more for large breeds, less for bantams).
- 0–2: stated capacity is more than double what the 4 sq ft/bird standard supports.
- 3–4: stated capacity is 50–100% higher than the space standard supports.
- 5–6: stated capacity is modestly optimistic, 20–50% over the standard.
- 7–8: stated capacity is within 20% of the space standard.
- 9–10: stated capacity matches or is more conservative than the space standard.
Upkeep Load (0–10)
Upkeep Load estimates the minutes per week a typical keeper spends cleaning the coop, based on droppings-board design, litter-tray access, and how easily the interior can be reached.
- 0–2: 60+ minutes per week; no droppings board, awkward or no interior access.
- 3–4: 35–60 minutes per week; partial droppings tray or narrow access door.
- 5–6: 20–35 minutes per week; removable droppings tray, walk-in or near-walk-in access.
- 7–8: 15–20 minutes per week; full-width droppings board, easy walk-in access.
- 9–10: under 15 minutes per week; full-width pull-out droppings board and unobstructed walk-in access.
Final Score Weighting
The Coop Score is the average of the four sub-scores, with the Predator Resistance gate described above applied first. A coop that scores 9 on Climate Fit, Capacity Accuracy, and Upkeep Load but only 3 on Predator Resistance receives a final Coop Score of 5, not 7.5 — because a coop that fails to keep predators out isn’t a 7.5 coop with one weak spot, it’s a coop that hasn’t done its most basic job.
