Best Chicken Tractors (Mobile Coops)

Last updated: July 2026 • Reviewed by The Coop Score team

A chicken tractor stays movable by one person only if it weighs under roughly 150 lbs empty and uses wheels large enough to clear uneven ground — heavier A-frame designs need two people or a wheelbarrow-style lift kit to relocate daily. The Happy Farmer Mobile Coop is our current top-tested pick.

ℹ️ What makes a tractor easy to move
Weight and wheel size matter more than overall footprint. A large, lightweight tractor with 10-inch or larger wheels moves easier than a smaller, heavier one with small casters that sink into soft ground. Built-in handles or a hitch point for a mower or ATV also make a real difference on uneven pasture.

Happy Farmer Mobile Coop

The lightest fully-enclosed tractor we’ve tested, movable by one adult across level ground without strain. Its hardware-cloth walls hold up to our standard predator check, though like most tractors it has no ground-level barrier, since a fixed apron would defeat the point of a mobile design.

Who it’s for: Keepers doing daily or weekly pasture rotation with a small flock, on reasonably flat ground.

Who should skip it: Keepers on hilly or heavily rutted ground, or anyone needing to move the tractor solo across long distances — see the wheel and weight notes below.

Predator Risk With Mobile Coops

Tractors trade the buried-apron protection of stationary coops for portability — you can’t bury a barrier under something that moves daily. That makes wall and floor hardware cloth even more important than on a stationary coop, since it’s your only defense against digging predators overnight. Close the tractor fully at dusk and check mesh integrity each season; a single torn seam is a bigger risk here than on a stationary coop with a buried apron as backup.
