Chickens need at least 4 sq ft of interior coop space per standard-size bird, plus 8-10 sq ft of outdoor run space per bird, based on the space standards most university extension services recommend. This is the figure we use to check every coop’s stated capacity against reality in our reviews.
Interior Space Per Bird
4 sq ft per standard-size hen is the widely cited minimum for interior coop space — enough room to move, perch, and access nesting boxes without constant crowding. Bantam breeds need less, roughly 2-3 sq ft each, while large heritage breeds do better with 5 sq ft or more per bird.
Run Space Per Bird
Outdoor run space should be at least 8-10 sq ft per bird if chickens will spend most of the day in a fenced run rather than free-ranging. More space reduces pecking-order stress and feather-picking, especially in larger flocks.
Nesting Box Ratio
Plan one nesting box per 3-4 hens. Hens will share boxes and even wait their turn, so you don’t need one box per bird — over-provisioning nesting boxes just takes up coop space better used for the 4 sq ft/bird interior standard.

Roughly 8 inches of roost bar per standard-size bird prevents overcrowding at night, when chickens are most likely to peck at each other over prime perching spots.
