Cold climates need roughly 10-15% of wall area as ventilation, positioned above roost height. Hot climates need 20% or more, positioned for cross-breeze at bird height. Getting this ratio wrong causes more harm than the temperature itself — trapped moisture in cold weather and heat stress in hot weather.

Signs of Poor Ventilation
- Too little (common in cold climates): visible condensation on walls or windows, ammonia smell inside the coop, frostbite on combs or wattles despite moderate temperatures.
- Too much (common in poorly designed hot-climate coops): direct drafts at roost height, birds huddling away from vents even in mild weather.
- Too little in hot climates: panting, lethargy, and reduced egg-laying during heat waves.
Retrofitting an Existing Coop
Adding ventilation is usually easier than removing it. Cut additional vent openings high on the walls (above roost height) and cover them with 1/2-inch hardware cloth. For coops with too much ventilation in cold climates, add removable vent covers or hardware-cloth-backed panels you can install for winter and remove in summer, rather than permanently sealing the opening.
